have been accepted to the summer 2009 "Cornell Biomedicines and Control
of Tropical Infectious Diseases and Vectors" Minority Health and Health
Disparities International Research and Training (MHIRT)
program. The program, directed by Dr. Manuel Aregullin, will
take place in the Dominican Republic. (4/09) |

Mia Castro '10 will be doing research in
Dr. Cleland's lab this summer on olfaction, learning, and memory.

| Britney Fletcher '12.
My summer plan includes an internship with New Mexico State
University-Carlsbad and some research with one of my high
school teachers. The internship is something that in the past has
been offered only to New Mexico State nursing students. I used to
be a part time student there, and I convinced the coordinator to
create a new pogram for me! I will be doing similar things as the
nurses with more shadowing. I will also take some classes at New
Mexico State. My other summer plan is to help my high school teacher,
Mr. Taylor, with his research this summer. I hope that this experience
will better prpare me for all the labs yet to come! (4/09) |

doing research for her senior thesis project at the Baker Institute
for Animal Health with Dr. Susana Mendez. (5/09) |

| Paula Latortue '10.
I am participating in the Cornell
Urban Scholars Program,
and as part of it I will be spending the summer in NYC
working with the National Latina Institute for Reproductive
Health. My primary responsibility will be to develop a
research design for a project on the reproductive health needs of
women in communities near the border Texas. Also, I am leading a
group that will travel for two weeks to the Dominican Republic.
During this service trip we will be teaching rural children various
aspects of public health. (5/09) |

| Jamie Moore '11. I am doing research at home
with Dr. Jason Bush, who is affiliated with Fresno State. The
project involves proteomics and searching for biomarkers in
the earlier stages of pancreatic cancer. I also may go to Peru for
two weeks in August! (5/09) |

|
Kwame Siriboe '12. This summer I will be working
for Intel Corporation (the designers of computer chips and
micro processors) in Hudson, Massachusetts. My former boss and supervisor
recommended me for this internship. The internship is 10-13 weeks long
and I will be working with other students and engineers on an assigned
project. While this internship has almost nothing to do with biology,
I feel like itÕs an opportunity for me to explore other avenues. Who
knows, I can combine my computer skills with my knowledge of biology
and produce something spectacular! (4/09) |

Charlotte Thurston '11.
This summer I am staying in Ithaca to do research (manual
labor) with my lab (Dr. Blossey's Natural Resources invasive
species projects, including worms, deer, reeds, slugs, tadpoles,
trees, shrubs, you name it!). (4/09) |

Marinda Whitaker '12. This summer I will be shadowing
an ophthalmologist and observing surgeries at Johns Hopkins
School of Medicine. (5/09) |

Roger Wong '12. During the first month of my summer,
I will be going to China with my family to explore the big cities such
as Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Canton. I also plan on visiting the large
attractions such as the Great Wall of China and the Buddhist Temple.
Then, I will be spending six weeks with Shoals
Marine Laboratory (off
the coast of Maine) to take a course on the Ecology of Animal Behavior
for my Neurobiology and Behavior concentration. After these six weeks
are over, I will be taking a working internship with Shoals, composting,
cooking in the kitchen, and working on various island projects. So
that will be a total of eight solid weeks on Appledore Island, can't
wait! (4/09) |

Stephanie Zimmerman '12. For the first part of this summer, I will work in a lab at the University of Illinois that studies learning and memory. Then I will go on a service project trip to Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic for two weeks with Cornell Health International to help the organization Orphanage Outreach. While in the Domincan Republic, we will teach sessions on health issues like sanitation, good nutrition, and disease prevention as part of a public health education program that serves summer camps and the local communities.
